FREE TOOLS FOR VIDEO EDITORS
Video file size calculator
Estimate video file size from duration and bitrate. Plan storage for copies and backups, or calculate the bitrate for a target file size.
21.09 GiB
- Storage with copies + allowance
- 27.17 GB
- Recording hours per 1 TB
- 44.2 h
Estimate based on average bitrate. Container overhead and variable bitrate can change the actual file size. Extra space applies only to storage planning.
YOUR NEXT EDIT, WITH FOCUS
Make the footage on those drives searchable.
Focus indexes video from local folders, external drives and mounted NAS volumes. Search your footage by speech or visual content without uploading the library.
See the workflowQUICK GUIDE
How to use this tool
- 01Enter the recording duration and average video bitrate.
- 02Include audio, the number of copies and extra storage allowance.
- 03Read the file-size estimate, or work backwards from a target size.
Good to know
How is video file size calculated?
File size in bytes is duration in seconds multiplied by total bitrate in bits per second, divided by eight. Audio is added to video bitrate. Container overhead and variable bitrate mean real files can differ.
Why are GB and GiB different?
One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. One GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Drives and operating systems can use different units for the same number of bytes.
Can resolution alone tell me the file size?
No. A 4K video can have very different sizes depending on codec, quality and bitrate. Use the expected average bitrate, or inspect a representative file with the metadata viewer.
Does Focus back up my files?
Focus is a search and review application. Keep independent backups of your originals and workspace. The storage calculation here is a planning estimate, not a backup plan.
